I spent many years getting to know my protagonist. She was visiting my dreams. I thought I knew her story. I tried to write it. A romance, coming of age book about her. The story didn’t come. It was forced. So I stopped. I should have guess that nearly a decade later, when I sat down to write about illegal logging, she would show up.
That is when I realized these are only partially my stories. They are also very much my character’s stories. Once I got out of my own way, of thinking I had to know what I was going to write, the valve was open and the flood of words began.
I have spent an entire career working on environmental and conservation issues. I have spent a lifetime wanting to be a writer.
Chemical Signals is the gift I didn’t know I needed in life. This book allowed me to merge my passions. The creative process has ignited an inner fire that I didn’t know needed to be stoked. I am alive when I write. And now, I will write again, and again, and again; until I can write no more.
